Why is the market competition for automotive filters so fierce?

As a crucial component in automobiles, filters remove metal shavings and various impurities from engine oil to prevent them from entering the lubrication system and causing wear and tear. The vast filter market has attracted the attention of numerous manufacturers, and the influx of domestic and international companies has led to increasingly fierce competition in the filter industry. Currently, there are over 1500 filter manufacturers in China. Due to the diverse varieties and structures of automotive filter products, they are suitable for both high-automation mass production and small-batch workshop-style production primarily using manual labor. This has resulted in a wide range of enterprise sizes, with most manufacturers being relatively small. There are over 40 large and medium-sized enterprises, but the industry has yet to see the emergence of a monopolistic, ultra-large enterprise.

　　The intense competition in the filter market is primarily seen in the aftermarket, mainly due to the following two reasons:

　　First, filters are consumable parts that require regular replacement. Therefore, aftermarket sales are very large, directly resulting in far more filter companies vying for the aftermarket than the original equipment market, leading to market homogenization.

　　Second, the relatively low technological capabilities of many enterprises. China's automotive filter industry has numerous manufacturers, most of which are small-scale, with inadequate production conditions, outdated testing methods, and operate as small-scale workshops. These companies generally do not meet the requirements for original equipment, so they can only compete in the aftermarket. This intense competition results in low brand concentration in the aftermarket; the top 5 filter companies hold only 15% of the market share. In contrast, in the original equipment market, the top 5 companies hold 40% of the market share.
