The function of the filter
A filter is a component that uses filter paper to remove impurities or gases. Generally referring to automotive filters, they are engine components. According to different filtering functions, they are classified into: oil filters, fuel filters (gasoline filters, diesel filters, oil-water separators, hydraulic filters), air filters, and air conditioning filters. As we all know, each product has its function. In the lubrication system, the oil filter ensures the smooth flow of lubricating oil, preventing impurities from scratching or roughening the surface of parts. Before the oil reaches the friction surface, it must undergo rigorous filtration. To achieve satisfactory filtration without increasing oil passage resistance, a coarse filter is generally connected in series with the main oil passage, and a fine filter is connected in parallel with the main oil passage. Here are some key points summarizing the function of filters:
1. To ensure the oil pump works well, large particles of impurities in the lubricating oil must be removed before entering the oil pump. This task is undertaken by the strainer. It is connected to the oil pump inlet. When the oil pump is working, the oil is sucked in through the gap between the cover and the float, and after filtering out large impurities through the filter screen, it enters the oil pump through the oil pipe welded to the float.
2. The coarse filter is connected in series between the oil pump and the main oil passage, also known as a full-flow filter, used to remove larger impurities from the oil. When the engine is running, lubricating oil under pressure is sent into the cavity around the filter element. Larger impurities in the oil are blocked by the paper filter element, while clean lubricating oil enters the inner cavity of the filter element and then enters the main oil passage of the cylinder block through the outlet.
3. Fine filter: Its function is to filter out smaller impurities in the lubricating oil. It is usually connected in parallel with the main oil passage and comes in centrifugal and paperboard types.
4. Fuel filter: Its function is to remove harmful particles and water from the engine fuel system to protect the oil pump, oil nozzle, cylinder liner, piston rings, etc., reducing wear and tear and preventing blockage. It removes iron oxide contained in the fuel.
